Hanging With Great Grandma
Easton loves hanging with Great Grandma Lil. Yesterday they had a great late morning chat and giggle time together. I think it's amazing that Easton has all four of his great granmothers still living. I hope to get a picture of all of them with Easton.
Homemade Blueberry Waffles
I found a brand new waffle maker at a garage sale for only $2.00! Since then our new favorite thing is to make waffles together. We get fresh blueberries to add to our homemade batter. This recipe really gets the mouth watering.
INGREDIENTS:
* 2 eggs
* 2 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 3/4 cups milk
* 1/2 cup vegetable oil
* 1 tablespoon white sugar
* 4 teaspoons baking powder
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat waffle iron. Beat eggs in large bowl with hand beater until fluffy. Beat in flour, milk, vegetable oil, sugar, baking powder, salt and vanilla, just until smooth.
2. Spray preheated waffle iron with non-stick cooking spray. Pour mix onto hot waffle iron. Cook until golden brown. Serve hot.
You can keep the batter, covered, in the fridge for up to a week. Just be sure to whisk well before using again. You may also use whole wheat flour for this recipe."

Strawberry Banana Smoothie
Here is a great way to get in fruit during your day. These are fabulous! I garnished it with whip cream and a slice of banana and strawberry but that is optional. Click here for an amazing site that has a large variety of smoothie recipes. We have tried a lot of them and haven't found one we wouldn't recommend.
There's always accidents that happen while cooking. I just have to laugh! I guess you just have to live and learn. The smoothies were amazing though!

Fresh From the Garden
Here are a few shots from my grandmas garden! She has an amazing garden filled with wonderful fresh veggies and mouth watering sweet corn! My grandpa and grandma used to do a lot of the work in the garden, but now that my grandpa has been gone for almost 12 years and my grandma getting up there in age my Aunt Nancy and Uncle Dan basically keep it up and going. They put in a lot of hours pulling weeds and making sure everything is kept up. Having a garden is a lot of hard work. I think Lou Erickson said it best when he he said; Gardening requires lots of water - most of it in the form of perspiration.
I dream someday that I can have a lovley garden over flowing wonderful veggies. My dream will have to be put on hold until we have a yard that has a good spot for one. I think my goal for next year is to grow tomatoes.

Keeping the Spark
I love thinking about when Caleb and I were first dating. I’m sure those of you that are married would agree. You know, the feelings, the excitement, the kissing. I remember getting all ready for dates. I would try on about 50 different combinations and outfits. I would even make out a checklist to make sure I didn’t forget to put on deodorant. (What a dork.) What a fun and exciting time in our relationship that was. There was a special spark!
When we take our marriage vows, we commit ourselves to the whole package—the highs, the lows, and the ordinary. But caught up by the delight and wonder of falling in love, we tend to anticipate that our marriages will be high romance, week after starry-eyed week. It may come as a jolt when we finally realize that more of the texture of marriage is getting dinner on the table and paying utility bills than it is moonlight and roses. It’s challenging to keep that spark in our marriage, amidst all our daily demands.
In my opinion, the quickest, easiest, and cheapest way to a sparky marriage is laughter. I read an awesome article called “The Power of Laughter.” It states, “On average, children laugh 400 times a day, while adults laugh about 15 times.” How sad! Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured.” Caleb is GREAT keeping laughter in our home. He is always messing with Easton and I. He doesn’t even try to make us laugh, something silly just happens to the big guy and I burst out laughing. Like one time he fell down the steps in the basement before the basement was finished. I ran to see if he was ok, and his face was red in anger and pain. He asked me if there was a mark on his back! (It reminded me of Chris Farley in Tommy Boy.) I couldn’t help but laugh. If you know my boy toy at all you would know that he is accident-prone. I could go on and on about the joy Caleb has brought into my life both intentional and unintentional.
I have decided to start a family journal. In our journal I will be recording funny things that happen in our lives. Our family journal is just a cheap little journal that I make an entry in every time something funny, cute, or amusing happens in our family. Most of the entries in it are about our Caleb, however with our newest addition, Easton I’m sure there will be plenty of pages filled with stories that will make us roll with laughter.
Life is funny. There is so much out there to enjoy. We should enjoy things and laugh together often. My favorite quote from the article, The Power of Laughter is, “We tend to like people we have fun with”. If we want to like our spouse, we need to have fun with them.
And the perfect venue for having fun is dating. We have to date our spouse! It may seem like we have less and less time for each other. That is why it is so important to keep dating regularly. Caleb and I plan on having a date night at least once a month. We also sneak in “home dates” when Easton is sleeping. We play games (I usually win, if Caleb happens to pull out a win, I usually let him! HA HA) I do have to admit that I do play Xbox with Caleb, (don’t tell my fifth graders!) We also watch our favorite shows or movies or just talk.
This will look different for each couple. We learned a lot in our young married class that was offered at our church about how to keep the spark alive. When Easton came into our lives, it was harder to have time together. Now that he is getting older it’s getting easier.
In closing, Jesus Christ has shown us the perfect example of how to love. I’m so grateful for the chance to be married! It is such a wonderful blessing and privilege to be on this fun, and wild life journey with someone I’m crazy about!
The Memory Post
Do you remember when?
Here are the rules.
1. As a comment on my blog, leave a memory that you and I had together. It doesn't matter if you know me a little or a lot, anything you remember! If we're only blogging friends or if you're a blog hopper who happens upon my blog regularly...leave me a comment. There must be reason you keep stopping by! Say something! If you don't have a blog or don't know how to sign in, sign up for an account! You won't regret it!
2. Next, re-post these instructions on your blog (if you have one) and see how many people leave a memory about you. It's actually pretty fun to see the responses. If you leave a memory about me, I'll be sure to write one about you... either on your blog, in my comment box, or I will email you back!

RAGBRI: (Register's Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa)
This is a bike ride acroos the great state of Iowa. This year one of the stops was in Ames. Lance Armstrong was in town to ride and stay for a concert. The concert was to benefit the flood victims of 2008. It was neat to watch the riders. Easton loved the bikes! A lot of the riders rode right by our house!

Homemade Baby Food
Hey all you Mommas' out there if you haven't tried making your own baby food yet I encourage you to do so, it is actually really fun and easy. Since Easton has turned six months I decided to take on the challenge of making my own baby food for him!
All you need is a food processor, ice cube trays, gallon freezer storage bags and fresh fruit or vegetables of your choice. (You can use frozen veggies too.) It also helps if you have a deep freeze or another freezer for space.
I went to the store and spent about fifteen minutes in the baby food isle. I wrote down step one foods and combinations that I could try once Easton had tried all the foods. I also used a great website: www.wholesomebabyfood.com
The website contains sample menus and tips on making baby food that I found to be quite helpful.
Here are some pictures of the baby food making process. This batch happens to be fruit. I used about eight apples and got 4 ice cube trays full. I also did pears and peaches. I find it easier if I do about three fruits or veggies at a time.
First Apple
Here is Easton eating his first apple. He loved it. The apple is in these first eaters. They are a handy thing to help little guys and gals enjoy foods they can gum, but might choke on if you just gave it to them. We have used them for fruit, crackers, animal crackers and juice cubes. You can find these wonderful items at Wal-Mart or Target. I highly recommend them. Easton loves them and I don't have to worry about my little man choking.

Iowa Sweet Corn
I don't know about you but here at the Van Cleave household we are corn crazy! Once sweet corn hits the corner about 8 blocks from our house we are regular attenders. There's nothing better then hot, buttery sweet corn! I found there are many ways to cook corn on the cob. Here are a few recipes that the Van Cleave's recommend.
Grilled Corn On The Cob:
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Ingredients:
* 8 ears corn
* butter, softened
* crumbled cooked bacon
* chopped chives
Preparation:
Pull back corn husks and remove silk. Place corn in cold water for 20 minutes; drain. Spread softened butter over corn; replace husks. Roast on grill for 20 to 25 minutes, or until tender. Serve with chopped chives and crumbled bacon, along with additional butter.
Baked Corn On the Cob:
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Ingredients:
* 4 to 6 ears fresh corn
* melted butter
* 1/3 cup diced sweet red bell pepper or roasted red bell peppers
* ground black pepper, to taste
Preparation:
Remove husks and silk from ears of corn. Place each ear of corn on a piece of heavy duty foil then brush with melted butter. Sprinkle about 2 to 3 teaspoons of diced red pepper over each ear of corn. Sprinkle lightly with ground black pepper. Wrap foil around corn and twist each end. Bake at 450° for 25
Flavored Butters for Sweet Corn:
Chili Butter
1/4 cup butter, softened
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon hot sauce
1 teaspoon sweet chili powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon sweet paprika
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/8 teaspoon chili powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
Sun-dried tomato butter
1/4 cup butter, softened
2 ounces sun-dried tomatoes (about 6 large), softened in boiling water and chopped
2 tablespoon Italian parsley, finely chopped
2 tablespoon fresh basil, finely chopped

Mystery Poop?!?
If you look closely you can see that something is not right with this picture. (sorry I know this is gross!) I was changing Easton the other day and discovered that there was something not right with his poop. As I looked closer, I realized there was a tag from a little ty beanie baby present in his poop! I couldn't believe my eyes! I couldn't help but grab the camera and capture this bizarre incident to share with all of you!
After I took the picture I proceeded to call Caleb at work and tell him of my discovery. His response was, "You called me at work to tell me that?" I found it to be earth shattering and thought it was important to share. I guess Caleb didn't. Sorry if this is disturbing for you, I however find it quite amusing. It's probably not the first poop discovery I will have either. However weird it might be, I'm kind of looking forward to what is in store for me as a mother. I will keep you updated with any other poop findings.

Strolling @ the Zoo
Easton loved being in the stroller at the Zoo. It was fun seeing his excitement! He has a new obsession either chewing on his sandals or his naked piggies. He is a pure joy to have around! Caleb and I have talked about taking our kids to s many Zoo's as we can. It's such a great learning opportunity.
